Bellows is right – preventing immigrants from getting drivers license is not going to protect our roads or protect us from terrorism. That’s probably why nobody has proposed that.

However, preventing criminals – which is what illegal immigrants are – from getting drivers licenses will do both these things, and this is what LD 2309 seeks to accomplish.

Those who don’t care about national security constantly demonize those of us against illegal immigration by dropping the “illegal” and making it accusing us of hating all immigrants, which is frankly ridiculous and offensive. These are groups that care more about the rights of criminals than they do about national security – and they’re supposed to be representing some sort of silent majority? Give me a break.

Actually, Bellows, all bills in the Maine Legislature come from one group of people: legislators. Both of his statements are ridiculous pieces of nonsense that only serve to demonize ordinary Mainers who support a reasonable proposal.report abuse

Nobody's "demonizing immigrants." Legal immigrants are WONDERFUL. They are not law-breakers. They contribute to society. They are welcome here and hopefully will help to fix our immigration system so more LEGAL IMMIGRANTS can come and live the American dream. However, LAW BREAKERS (AKA illegal immigrants) cost us much and we don't know who they are or whey they are here. They fill our prisons (I know that firsthand after working 3 years with a felony parole caseload). They create victims and then flee back and forth over the border to avoid jail and resitution. They are creating gangs and harming states with both people and property crimes in states such as Arizona and Texas. They are filling the welfare roles and the schools. They refuse to follow our laws to come here LEGALLY the way other immigrants have done for decades. Our heathcare system needs an overhaul. Medicare and Social Security will go bust in 2017. Yet we're discriminating by wanting people to obey our laws and be here LEGALLY???? GIVE ME A BREAK.... Read below to see just how much illegal immigration costs U.S. taxpayers:

What we have here is a Democratic State Legislator and a Democratic Governor. Democrats are Socialists and therefore believe that the poor should be given everything the rich have without earning it. Now, it is the States view that everyone should have a drivers license if you are a legal citizen or not. You need no proof of citizenship to get one. After all, a drivers license is not to be used as an ID Card. It is the States contention that it will cost 2 million a year to meet what the DHS wants Maine to do.(If I heard the amount correctley.) How hard is it for the clerk at DMV to ask for proof of citizenship and say maybe a green card or previous drivers license from another state? The State Government is in a shortfall due to the fact the Governor did not listen to the people when we asked 4 years ago to curb spending and cut taxes. Now we have higher costs in the form of fee increases. The governor will not raise taxes, (yet anyway), but the fees will increase all across the board until he can't add anymore fees to services. Governor Baldy, stop the bullcrap and admit you don't know anything and resign. That will get Maine started on the right track.report abuse

“No other state was threatened by DHS with the specter of citizens unable to fly or enter federal buildings if they did not pass radical statutory changes.”

That's because no other state is stupid enough to have a law that says "it's against the law to comply with the RealID Program".report abuse
