Write a letter to Baldacci. He will tell you that he has no oversight on the Maine Turnpike. This is a big problem and something that needs to be corrected.report abuse.

The Maine Turnpike as a whole is one of the few "Quasi State Agency" that actually manage the road well. It is up to date and well maintained. Management however, has become more and more arrogant as time goes on. They do as they please and have no State oversight. I say, leave the turnpike alone as a whole but have more accountability. If nearby residents think a problem such as this is happeneing, they should be able to go to thier representatives and get answers in a timely and respectful manner.report abuseCommonCents

The MTA is a self-serving albatross from the pass, who's continued existence is precluded by the creation of the national system of Interstate Highways. It's time for its creator, the Maine Legislature, to abolish the MTA.report abuse

The Maine Turnpike Authority was created by an act of the Legislature in 1941 as an independent state agency and given the authority to construct and operate a Turnpike "from some point at or near Kittery to a point at or near Fort Kent".

I live in York and one of the founding members of this "grassroots campaign" has lived in York for many generations. That family, with connections at the town hall in years gone by, would always be there for those who couldn't pay their taxes and they would step in and do so until that land became their land. This is all about making it another town's problem and let's not forget that important fact. I also feel it's about driving up the cost of the land in question for once you pay them what they'd like the issue wouldn't be so important. The people of York would rise up against the toll booth being moved south of York and once again it's all about what affects those who feel they deserve preferential treatment. Too many of these folks feel that York has been left out of the mix regarding help from the state but you should know that the value of their land, the fact that those in Washington County and Aroostook County, to name a few deal with poverty every day and in my opinion those are "real mainers" who pay the price to try and keep ahold of land. York might as well be NH or MA to the rest of the state but they want to be treated like some band of brothers who raise blueberry crops downeast and are being taken advantage of. This is an absolute joke and I hope that the Maine Turnpike Authority does all they can to make sure that what is best for "Our State" is done and not for some land rich, or those who chose to buy homes where they live, twist the issue around. We have many problems to solve in this state and fortunately we have tourists who give us much needed revenue. Have any of you been backed up at the bridge leading into Maine on holiday weekends or to Biddeford when heading south?? This is long overdue and those who oppose any sort of modernization should fact the same spotlight they place on the DOT.report abuseYou must be a registered user of MaineToday.com to post a comment.
