It's a very simple four letter word: "cave". It's all fine and dandy to oppose RealID in the abstract, to talk about privacy or what is and is not the province of a state, but when push comes to shove, Maine will CAVE. Why did DHS pick on Maine? Because they knew that Maine would cave. Just like it did with Verizon/NSA/PUC. It's the same statute protecting driver's license (and all the other state databases) that failed to prevent the Verizon wiretapping.

Now we have laws saying we won't cooperate with RealID and we cooperate with RealID. What history is Winston Smith to write? Thanks to Rep Marley who said this was a bad bill, but sponsored it, somehow tied it to sex offenders and then voted for it. Thank you to all the others who voted to oppose RealID when it was easy and chickened out when it mattered. Profiles in Courage indeed.

This RealID stuff isn't about terrorists; it's about building a checkpoint society.

This is not about privacy. Perhaps the next step in Homeland Security's coercive efforts will concern privacy. At the present time, the Federal government is forcing us to do what we shouldhave done years ago. These changes require that we will no longer issue driver's licenses to those who are not maine residents, those who are not in this country legally; and that those who are here pursuant to a Visa will see their licenses expire when their Visa does.

There is no earthly reason to oppose this. We should not license illegals, or people who live in Massachusetts. A Maine drivers license should be for a Maine resident, who is here lawfully. Otherwise we are inviting people who are not here lawfully, to come here; or we are encouraging people to engage in an unlawful weapons trade. In any event, the police officer stopping one of these people for speeding will have no idea who he is dealing with.

When they demand our compliance with a National ID card, then it will be time to raise hell.report abuse

National ID Card? I don't like it. Sounds like an old spy movie: "Your papers please".
I don't like the idea the police can ask you to show ID, if you not doing anything wrong (or driving a car). Big Brother all over again. Like Waco, the Cuban kid, and now this thing in Texas.
This is nothing new, the Rum Lobbyist had the Governor issue a "shoot to kill on sight" order during the Shay Rebellion. The Armories were built in major cities to house troops during union strikes. J Edgar Hoover (aka Mary in the red dress) had a list of who to round up and built camps to put them in.

Don't worry, they know who you are.report abuse
