Assault with a deadly weapon would have only occurred had the owners commanded for the dog to attack, and even according to the news story they were after the puppy, NOT after the little girl. It is very unfortunate that she got hurt, even more so that her puppy was killed. How stupid was it of her parents to let their 11 year old out by herself knowing there were two potentially aggressive dogs (of any breed) across the street with irresponsible owners?
Calling someone white trash because they have a Pit Bull is offensive to owners of this breed - including myself. These dogs needs to be removed from where they are, tested to see if they can be rehabilitated and euthanized if they can not.
"Punish the deed, not the breed". Don't get all worked up because of the sensationalism of throwing "Pit Bull" into a headline. There are 20 different breeds that fall into that category, including Boxers. Vicious and aggressive dogs are unacceptable regardless of breed. Ban irresponsible owners, not dogs.report abuse

Natural instinct to kill is a load of garbage! This is a beautiful example of POOR DOG OWNERSHIP, not bad dogs! These dogs are loyal and faithful companions when they are RAISED AND HANDLED CORRECTLY. The media is NOT objective since Golden Retriever bites don't get reported, and I never saw it on the news when the Pomeranian jumped into the crib and killed a 9 day old baby by maulting it's face (Google it, it happened). Go to dogbreedinfo.com or AKC.org to use something objective as research on this breed you would KNOW that these dogs were NEVER EVER bred to be human aggressive, and if a child could not handle the dog the dog was shot - literally, with a gun.

OMG, how many incidents of pit bulls and rottweilers does it take for people to get a clue. All dogs were originally bred for a purpose. Get it, they had a job to perform and that was their only purpose in life. I own a 12 year old 7lb Yorkie. Last year alone he killed many mice, a ground hog (woodchuck)3x his size, a porcupine and a skunk. He was bred to find rodents in Mines in England and to kill them 100's of years ago or at least in the last century. I can guarantee you if you were my neighbor and you owned a rodent he would find a way to kill it and drive me crazy it he couldn't get to it. Why do people think pit bulls are any different? Why are they always defending them? My dog is definitely cuter and cuddlier than any of the pits but he IS a killing machine given the chance to perform the job his breed was intended for all those years ago. By the way, this is my second Yorkie and the first one exhibited all the same behaviors.report abuseTheway Iseeit

My second comment on the matter is that I'm very surprised that white trash can afford the home that WGME showed to be the owners of the pit bulls.
HUH?
Alot of young folks get Pits to try and make others think they are tough or whatever. It is just an image thing and they have no clue in raising a dog. I drive through Lewiston twice a week & see many young mothers with a couple kids on one arm and a Pit Bull on the other. Brilliant. I am so scared for these children. Yesterday I saw 2 very small(5-6 yrs. old) kids walking a Pit down the main street in Lewiston.
One kid was hitting the dog with a stick on its back and the other was pulling hard on the leash.TROUBLE!!
You cannot BREED OUT their natural instinct to kill.
We have a Labrador that was minding his own business one day in HIS yard when he was attacked by 2 pitbulls whose owner had trespassed on our property. My husband and brother fought those pits off our lab with rocks and kicks to their heads until finally, after 20 mins.,they managed to free one of the pits and tried to get the owner to take the dog. The owner said"No way,I'm not touching that dog!" she was afraid of her own dog!!!We could not beleive the behavior of the owner or the dogs. After another 10-15 mins, they were able to get the 2nd pit off our lab and again tried to get the owner to take the dog and put it in her car,she wouldn't do it! After flipping me the bird(when I asked about her dogs shots),she took off up the street. We reported to the police that our Lab had been attcked by a couple of Pit Bulls. The next day,we saw in the police blotter, that she had also reported (2 mins after our report) that her Pit Bulls were ATTACKED BY A PACK OF LABS! We have since seen this girl with the same Pits in her vehicle WITH AN INFANT! Each dog JUMPING BACK AND FORTH OVER THE BABY to get to the other side of the seat! We just learned she had to put them down due to attacking someone. CRAZY! Time for dog control!report abuse

You people are not getting it! It is not about Pit Bulls in general. Even though they and all dogs can be dangerous. What about this poor traumatized little girl. Growing up in America/Maine having a little puppy, most childrens dreams and a child's best friend. This man needs to be punished as he inflicted this against her by not having his dogs under control. This is clearly a case of aggravated assault and attempt to kill with a dangerous weapon. The weapon being his dogs. If someone was shot with someone elses gun the gun owner would be held accountable. It's good thing this child is not my daughter because mommy dearest saying her baby boy is in New York needs a wake up call. Please lady teach your son some responsibility and respect for others.report abuseYou must be a registered user of MaineToday.com to post a comment. Register or log in.
