Currently everyone with private health insurance pays a 1.7% tax on claims to benefit the privileged few on Dirigo. Now Baldacci and Democrats in the legislature want to raise that tax PLUS everyone has to pay through the beer, wine, and beverage tax. Beer and wine taxes were more than doubled while you pay almost as much for beverages. Broad-based taxes should have broad-based benefits.report abuseBiddy

Exactly how is throwing 14,000 people on the uninsured list, seeking charity care at hospitals going to drop the cost of anything? You might save a few pennies on something and pay it out in hundreds when you go to the doctor. Exactly how is that going to save anything?
The only argument I have is that Dirigo should be funded from the General Fund and not by gimmicks. More people could be insured and the cost of the pool would go down.
I have one friend on Dirigo who pays $8-900 per month for a policy for him and his wife. They are both over 50 and Self Employed. They've created two jobs and pay taxes as well as pay most of the insurance policy cost. How many of you bright lights here pay ANYWHERE NEAR THAT for a health policy?report abuse

City Girl. How exactly is Dirigo wasted tax dollars? The people enrolled are all WORKING people that would otherwise be uninsured or on that joke of a high deductible policy that Anthem sells. These people all pay premiums to Dirigo Health Care.

No, Mark I'm not. I'm not in his Ward. I agree with you where Biddeford is concerned. Did you watch the recent budget meetings? Some of the council doesn't seem to have a clue.
