There must be services to reach the homeless, but there are MANY people who do not want to take advantage of the programs that WILL get them off the streets (i.e. treatment programs). I supervised some of them when I handled a felony probation/parole caseload. The minute 6-18 month treatment programs were offered, they absconded. It was possiblity their one chance to get off the street for good.report abuse

There are many dangerous people living on the streets. The stats concerning drug and alcohol-addicted, along with those who suffer from mental illness can be scary. When our local city did an informal study last year to see who our homeless population actually was, it found that every 4 of 11 had outstanding felony warrents for arrest. Many of those warrants were for violent charges. 7 of 11 of our homeless had come in from other towns/cities to take advantage of our "friendly", helping atmostphere (some had even bought bus tickets to get here and then returned "home" each night:).

Darn, PatsFan! He'll also get first class medical and dental care, and he won't be paying any cost-share, either.

That's great! Now he'll have a permanent home with heat and food, and we'll be paying for it.report abuseYou must be a registered user of MaineToday.com to post a comment. Register or log in.
