Eric,

I wasn't going to comment, it's just tragic and that's all I thought about it, but then I read this:

I guess it's no surprise though, as it seems like the majority who comment here are the type who hide in their safe little homes and poke fun at others.

That's not only a gross editorialization, but it brands you as thoughtless, vicious, and invested in silencing others. How you can make such a claim defies logic, but then again when people become emotionally blinded, as happens with guns, hunting and the like (see, my own "editorialization") then reason leaves.

Perhaps the venom of your post belies that you have somehow defined yourself in some way that relates to what you saw posted, and perhaps what you read threatened you personally.

Buck up camper. Others don't have to agree with you. You might want to listen more and leap less. That knee of yours has too much of a jerk as it is, you wouldn't want to kick where you ought not to after all Davey Crockett (there, another "editorialization," just like you are apt to do ... you like it?).report abuse

Eric,

After an outdoor career of probably 2500 days of whitewater and wilderness guiding, including 9 Grand Canyon trips, and a 60,000 mile 4 year RV tour through 47 of the states and 7 provinces with my family, I wouldn't characterize my life at the age of 47 as having been one of "hiding in my safe little home and poking fun at others".

However, at least 3/4 of those experiences were when I was in the role of being responsible for the safety (and enjoyment) of others as a guide and instructor, or as a father of 2 equally adventurous young girls, or a wife who rowed a raft down the Grand Canyon with me when she was 7 months pregnant, (our river trip was planned long before her pregnancy!!).

In those roles, it was indeed my responsibility to 'protect the clients from themselves'. There was certainly no way I could 100% unequivocally ever 'keep them safe', but I certainly could help them to best 'manage the risks' inherant to outdoor activities. Hence, part of the reason others like me have posted comments to this unfortunate incident.report abuse

There's an awful lot of selfish, thoughtless, comments going on here. I guess it's no surprise though, as it seems like the majority who comment here are the type who hide in their safe little homes and poke fun at others.

While commenting on who should and shouldn't do what, maybe I should direct you to make age and health comments to the widow of a good friend of mine. He died in his yard at 38 years of age. He was healthy as a horse, and avid outdoorsman, contractor, and constantly on the go. A heart attack took him away from us.

If you want to enjoy the excitement of life from your safe little computer terminal, do so while letting the rest of us grab onto life and enjoy what we can while we are here.

At 36, I will continue to enjoy life and it's many forms of excitement for as long as my physical condition will allow me. I can only hope that as I get older, I will be able to continue to live my life, not spend my time on the sidelines attempting to protect everyone else from themselves. The last thing this world needs is any more liberals!report abuse

This type of 'family entertainment' shouldn't be marketed as though it were a canoe ride and safe. This is a relatively dangerous sport yet it's marketed to the general public as safe and fun without any hint as to the dangers involved.report abuse
