College is NOT for everyone. Slots should be given to those who have the best gpa's/testing scores and recommendations. Poor is poor. If you are poor, you need assistance to pay for college. The money should go to the best and brightest always, especially now that it is getting more difficult to find a spot in many universities/colleges. Our workforce must compete globally and Americans deserve to have the most qualified workers. College acceptance should be based on MERIT and nothing else...report abuse

There are no recent national studies showing the number of college kids enrolled in remedial courses, but the numbers (guess) appear to be up to 42%. That is SCARY! I did find this statistic from the NEA: "Between 1992 and 2000, 69% of those students who had NOT ENROLLED IN ANY POSTSECONDARY REMEDIAL COURSE earned a
degree or certificate by 2000."
