Also the Navy sees it's self as weakest in "green water" class of ships like the Littoral Combat Ship, not in the large "blue water" class of ships that BIW likes to build. However it's not clear how building another Arleigh Burke class, at $1.3 billion, is going to help any of those problems and the Progressive Caucus in the House may well object to the cost.
I suggest BIW learn how to build the Littoral Combat ship, which the Navy seems very enthusiastic about. Currently Austral USA is the only builder of large high-speed aluminum vessels in the US, and that's what the Navy seems to be most interested in. Here is a photo of the Austral-built Littoral Combat Ship after launch in April - it was designed by BIW:

The Navy seems to be searching for cost-saving ideas with a new aircraft carrier to be funded that's apparently expected to costs $10 billion. At the same time the Bush administration is pushing for the Navy to deploy the national missile defense system, which the DDG-1000 hull was apparently insufficient to host.

This all started when the House Arm Services Committee recommended cutting the DDG-1000 causing the DOD to study the issue. Maybe Tom Allen is finally rethinking giving up his seat on that committee. Na..…he probably still doesn’t get it.report abuseLarry Smith
