"... wearing such regalia, particularly on assignment overseas, might brand the reporters as representing the U.S. in an official capacity, making them a tempting target for terrorists."
The motives of folks ranting no flag pins are pretty obvious since most don't wear them themselves.
The military seems to be quite impressed with what is erroneously referred to in these comments as "ballistic wood". They are panels that are the primary material for the Modular Ballistic Protection System (MBPS).
"Testing performed at Tyndall Air Force Base in early 2006 demonstrated that MBPS was able to withstand blasts as close as 21 feet away without any failure in the shelter’s structure, anchors or overall integrity and without damage to the MBPS panels."

While the bundle up program will have limited effect overall, it is guaranteed to reduce the consumption of heating oil somewhat if followed. Who would have anything against people saving money on their own bills while reducing demand to help lower costs for all?report abuse

I doubt that ABC instructed reporters not to "ware" anything, but on the flag pin issue they gave a very reasonable explanation:

Could be worse, they could be as lame as U-Maine trying to convince politicians that ballistic wood really works, and wasting millions in taxpayer money in the process.
Could be worse, they could be as lame as a story covering the governors pointless bundle-up approach to keeping warm this winter.
Yup, it could be worse!

Could be worse, they could do something as lame as the ABC network telling their reporters not to ware the American lapel pin on their clothing.
