The reason federal law allows an employer to demand a secret ballot for union representation is to prevent intimidation and bribery when employees decide on union representation. Thus current federal law keeps the unions out of trouble, however Allen was apparently so busy doing his donkey routine he didn’t notice.
Therefore what I want is a Senator who works in a bipartisan manner to get legislation and appropriations passed that is important to our state. For example getting more LIHEAP through this Congress is likely going to be extremely difficult. Senate Democrats put forward an appropriation bill for additional LIHEAP, however the bill failed to amend a House appropriation bill and was almost certainly unconstitutional. Demanding a vote on that was essentially to make a mockery out of those on LIHEAP.report abuse

Tom Allen seems to have this notion that the job of Senator is like a donkey: they do whatever party bosses tell them, without even thinking. That’s perhaps why Allen keeps gets in these odd predicaments, like trying to explain why he voted to deny employers the right to demand a secret ballot for union representation.
