With this move the state of Maine expects to save 2 million dollars of state money. Given that Maine's federal match is 2 to 1 that means the cut represents 6 million worth of services to the elderly.
Maine Democrats decided that was a better place to cut then to cut MaineCare for young healthy adults.report abuse

Yes Bunni. I'm aware of where the funding comes from for these programs.

David Hughes: Most assisted living facilities take MaineCare and MediCare. These are FEDERALLY funded programs where the Feds put most of the money in and the State puts in the rest. Each state is allowed a certain amount of money each year for these programs. These include the Food Stamp program, MaineCare, MediCare, Voc Rehab, etc. I can't understand making these cuts, to the elderly. If we want to make cuts, lets start with the TANF program and do the welfare to work program that Bill Clinton signed into law. The Feds also supply money for daycare and the Aspire program, so mothers/fathers on TANF can get jobs/go to school, etc. and there is no out-of-pocket expense for transportation as these programs reimburse for fuel used to go to school or work also. About time we put the "young'uns" back to work and left the elderly alone.report abuseTheKidAgain

That folks is what is wrong in this state.
And, this is just play tactics. They cut where it is necessary to cause a public uproar. So when the next vote comes around, we vote for THAT too.
I'd like to vote on where cuts are made in the first place. Leave the elderly alone and make the losers earn their keep.report abuse

I'd rather watch a 20 year old freeze to death in choosing not work then even think about my grandmother not having a bed to sleep in.

Welcome to the compassion of a democratically controlled welfare state! Cut the benefits to the needy first. You got to love it. How about we cut out some of the bureaucracy first before we even contemplate these cuts.report abuseYou must be a registered user of MaineToday.com to post a comment. Register or log in.
