Oil may not be the sole reason for the shutdown, but it sure is the tipping point. I can tell you with absolute certainty that the rapid increase in fuel prices has severely hindered my ability to pay my other bills. Now take a paper mill, with customers. In order to survive in a business that works with contracts, you cannot just pass off added costs onto the customer.
And also 3M is a major customer for the Otis Mill. Those post it notes you mention are probably the only thing keeping that mill from permanently shutting down right now.report abuse

Oil my arse, my sister works in the Otis mill as did my dad and his dad before him. I was told two years ago that they were making and stuffing warehouses with post-it notes. Post it notes for cripe's sake, how long did they expect to survive? The Otis mill started to be a drain when they stopped making actual paper. If Verso goes so will Otis since Verso provides waste water treatment. What great timing but oh I forgot, their not your family so who cares.report abusewilliealso

The mills have closing in Maine for the last 50 years. Look at the mills in Biddleford,Sanford,Lewiston,Alburn,Skowhegan,Norridgewock,Farmington,Wilton,Bingham,Dexter and the list goes on and on and these mills were Shoe shops and textile miles and had no union working them. Now the paper mills are getting hit and they have a union working for them and it not working so don't blame Bush and Cheney for their proplems, blame the union all they want to do is strike for anything doing a paychecks. I can make lists or strikes that has been held in Maine the last 20 years.report abuse

Oh & FYI, I guess living in denial of our current economic situation may present a picture of sunshine & lollypops, but I choose to voice my objection!
