Deal pending, Checks in the Mail, No really I’ll call you next week….
A Bangor Daily News reporter for Millinocket, that classily misquotes town officials reports that there is still hope for the mill~ http://bangornews.com/detail/49977.html
Now what Nick; is this an exercise in political patty-cake or have you become a complete company man?
It’s not going to reopen, and even if it does, the town is still going take the dam, force Brookfield to clean up its toxic love cannel and quite possibly litigation for the cancer clusters surrounding the Mill. Yup, The Canadian based Brookfield Power and Brookfield Asset Management will be paying for this mess for a long time.

I wouldn’t want to own stock in this sinking ship!

well you know what this means.Balcacci will turn on his tunnel vision and try and find another paper company to come in and fail. Afterall that building can only be used for a papermill. Why would u try and figure out a new biz? Alternative fuel?

No,that wouldmake too much sense...paper companies only!report abuse

NoDemocrats. You'll find that many other states are having problems too with the paper industry. A mill in Vermont closed last year, not because of any of the things I previously mentioned, but because of a lack of investment capital.
New Hampshire also has had problems retaining paper plants. The paper industry as a whole is having problems. That's why many former paper plants are turning to wood pellet production or other new economy ideas.
Every time a plant closes it's silly to sit there and blame politics and the other party. I'm a Democrat at heart but I don't blame Bush for all the nation's problems. Politics can't fix everything and doesn't affect everything.
Like the shoe industry and textiles, paper is becoming an old, obsolete industry. We need to encourage more new economy businesses to open and operate in Maine to be sure. I agree we need to upgrade our infrastructure to do that.
We need investment capital in Northern New England badly. To do that we have to show investors a reason to invest here. Instead of whining about taxes our business groups should be latching on to new ideas and promoting them.report abuse

Biddy, you are correct on some points but totally out of touch on others. Utility costs are significantly higher in Maine than other areas, we continue to make bad decisions regarding regulation and construction of new power plants not to mention our membership in the ISO pool. We continue to remove dams and think we will rely on wind power to meet our needs in the future. Why do we continue to turn down projects that can potentially reduce our utlity costs such as the Wiscasset coal gasification, the LNG facility in eastern Maine, the LNG terminal in Harpswell,... the list goes on.

Our competition is not so much the foreign companies as it is ourselves. We continue to create programs in the state such as Dirigo Heatlh that is nothing more than a leach on businesses and taxpayers in Maine. Our tax burden, regulations and other demands on all industries are driving them out of Maine.

We also have an inadequate rail system that is run by a company that does nothing to add value to our state but yet we continue to tolerate this. It is difficult to be competitive when you can not trust the rail company to move your product out of the state in a timely fashion which forces a company to rely on trucking which in general is more expensive.

Gone is the era of the Yankee work ethic where work got done with little or no whining. Now everyone feels they are entitled to something free from the government.

At some point the people of the State of Maine will start to realize that we have been our worst enemies and start to make decsiions that make sense for our great state.report abuse
