Yes the middle class will not be boating, even more so now with the extra burde of the bail out bill wich Tom and Sister voated for. BUT the rich have not stoped spending and big boats are in. One rich singer flips boats like we use to flip houses and his yard of choice is the east coast Hinckly yd in Florida. If you have money but not much else then you can at least impress the girls with a boat which was owned by a famous star. So flippinis good.
There is a famous Maine yatch bulide of muiltie hulls who now works in S. America. He can build you a fine yatch for 1/3 the cost of Maine built yatch. In addition to cheep labor there is no DEP to get in the way of the fiberglass chemicals.
Yes we can hae a GREEN Maine and high taxes but no work.report abuse

Was down to the Hinckly yard in east Florida last spring. They had at least 30 new picnic boats in the yard unsold. The picnic boat is not what the rich are looking for. The yard was full and there were 50/ 60 independent workers car's in the parking lot. There is a large pool of independent yatch workes in the area as there are severl large boat yards nearby. Boats which being worked on were 70ft and up with jobs requireing a good skill level. Much work was being done out sid due to Florida's good wheather. Also keep in mind the workers are bill out at a very high rate and there is no personal income tax in Florida, a worked needs to be only concerned with federal taxes. Big advantage to the independent contractor and to Hinckly. Word was that Hinckly may keep a small yard in Maine so that the maine "reputation" and be used , but
productin will mostly be moved to it's southern yards. Sounds as if Maine has lost Hinckly. The workers should move south just like when they left Biddeford. They will not be back. It is hard for bout builders to compite with China.report abuse

Going to be a lot more layoffs here. Bush-McCain has destroyed the middle class and their rich buddies lost a ton of money on Wall St. No money for yachts in this kind of economy. That's if a Rich man can find a Bank solvent enough to give him a loan anyway.report abuse
