This is also to Yankee Biker~I agree with wtvl124 on some points and I'll tell you why. The person riding the motorcycle who is now clinging to life in a Portland hospital is my father and is the grandfather of wtvl124. Although this tragic accident is not about blame, I feel the need to clarify something. But first, Yankee Biker, were you there, did you see what happened or what type of vehicles were involved? From all witness accounts, the vehicle that slowed down was a large SUV that was slowing down to actually turn into the same parking lot as Mr. Phillips was waiting to pull out of. Based on witness accounts there is no way that my father could have seen the vehicle pulling out over the hood of a large SUV. My father has been riding for 20+ years without an accident and ALWAYS pays attention! And he didn't have an opportunity to "react correctly" because he never saw it coming. So, Yankee Biker while you sit in your castle distributing blame and unsupported, unsolicited opinions, please know that my family and I aren't even thinking about blame; we are just praying that our father, grandfather, husband, brother will wake up someday soon and be the active, vibrant 76 year old man he was on Monday. I only hope that you never have to face this situation that we are currently in, but if you ever do, rest assured that you won't find my comments on here giving an opinion when I wasn't even there for the tragic situation. Yes, my entire family finds your comments offensive! May you be safe when you ride so no one will have to make those comments about you.report abuse

Slowing to allow one into the flow of traffic is a common courtesy, yes. BUT, I'd not do it if I saw I was merely presenting another risk to someone else.
All three drivers in this incident fail their defensive driving test. One shouldn't have opened the door without thinking "Will everyone around me know what I am doing", one should have thought "Wow, what a nice person, but is everyone else going to also see me and allow me out", and the rider should've wondered "why is this car slowing in traffic and does the one pulling from the lot see ME".

Pick at my comments and theory all you want. But these techniques have worked over 1 million documented miles for me. And yes, I am also a rider.

Best of luck to you Mr. Michaud, may you recover quickly.report abuse

It's reckless to slow down to allow someone to enter the roadway especially on a 4 lane road and just as bad for the other driver to enter the road without knowing whats coming.

You don't take some strangers word that the coast is clear just because he gave you the go ahead.

Poor guy on the motorcycle just happened to be at the same point as where two fools met.

I hope he makes a full recovery to be able to ride again.report abuse
