Don't take this out of context. Is a casino the end all answer to our problems? NO!! But with the current economic crisis here in Maine any business that wants to come in and supply jobs should be welcomed. Then again if that happened Ol Baldy wouldn't be able to grow state government by leaps and bounds to hide how bad the business enviroment really is. Ever noticed how many businesses have closed down and laid off workers, yet our unemployment rate never goes up. But the number of state workers continues to grow.report abuse

Here is another fine example of our biased government leaders. There shouldn't even have to be a vote on this issue. We already have gambling. It's called Megabucks, Powerball, scratch tickets and slot machines. The first 3 are all state controlled and the last someone obviously "contributed" to the correct re-election campaign funds.

Be positive. Dump the NIMBY attitude. Encourage your kids to pursue education and training that will give them the skills to reduce the barriers to companies coming to Maine. Carefully consider spending proposals and most of all stop waiting for opportunity to be presented to you on a silver platter and return to the Maine tradition of making your future happen before it happens to you. Boy, the tone of the comments written here is really depressing. The common theme of the writers is, "Give me a job." What I don't see is anyone suggesting ways to attract jobs to Maine. The ultimate example of a "state" that turned its economy around 180 degrees is Ireland. Ireland had all of the same problems that Maine has but had the courage and intelligence to understand that lowering taxes is the path to attracting business. Maine has a good work ethic but has a bad attitude about change. If we're ever going to make Maine more attractive to new business, we have to convert our NIMBY attitudes into NTY (No Thank You) to programs that add to our tax burden that have little to do with improving our business climate. The biggest insult is that the people pulling the levers of state here know this already. We need to bring new leadership into the state that has the courage to make dramatic change, not incremental change. We should be leveraging out national reputation for good schools by channeling that education into areas that produce a workforce that has the skills for the emerging economy. We should take advantage of our natural resources like wind and tidal forces to export green power and become an incubator for the next wave of innovation. Maine is uniquely positioned due to our general lack of tradtional infrastructure to be the maleable test bed for the next "Apollo" program of developing practical solutions to increasing energy costs through non-carbon based sources.

"I think there's going to be a point where somebody who's got a more friendly business climate is going to offer an opportunity to someone to open a resort like this," said LaMarche. "They'll beat us to the punch."

What right do the people in the state of maine to tell the towns what they can in there town or city. There should be a law pasted in maine that only the people in that town or city will have the say what comes into there town as long as theres no state or federal money involvedreport abuseCornelius Alowischious

I can't figure out why the Casino bill's fail every time. The state of Maine is economically depressed, there are few good paying jobs around, there are failing mills, air stations and shipyards; yet we still vote out a good source of jobs, employment and revenue time after time. Is it the Dems who vote this down? If so, I don't see the argument. Religious Right? Maybe, I just can't figure it out. I don't see much of a downside. Has anyone who voted 'no' on this referendum ever set foot in Oxford County? There are 9,000,000 cows; 8,000 potato fields, 83 churches and one Walmart in the whole frickin' place. One casino isn't going to stop the rotation of the earth people. Wow. Why didn't all the flaming libs push this through? Why oh why? Give us real change. Vote for the casino next time you grinches.report abuseEugene Ketchen

Maine should develop more tourist and summer home locations. Cape Cod is at it limits. NH Lakes region is packed. Maine has lots of space.
Boston has lots of high tec jobs with good income. Those people still want to get away and Maine has alot to offer.report abuse

Just be happy with all the money the Casino backers spent. I don't think they would have built it in today's economic conditions.

i feel really bad for everybody. I am not a big casino fan but whatelse is going to show up in Maine for jobs?? We lose Brunswick NAS and what is going to replace it? If we lose anything else, this ship will sink fast. Casinos work well in other states. We need to follow a good model and go for it.report abuse2dogsinheat

B S ,You should have voted it in.But the state should get a big cut.I don't know,i guess you folks are waiting for a shoe god to give you jobs.Sad when someone is greatfull for a low paying phone jerk job because that's all they can find. What the state should do is start a state run online poka room. And set it up so folks can only put a small amount of money and only twice a mo. in to play. Some state will sooner or later. It cost me anywhere from 5 to 10 bucs to load my poka account with a $100. Would realy like to see that cost colected by my old home state than anyone else except my kin.Point is the goverment has made it a little harder for me to load up my account.Iplay poka on line with others from all over the nation and the world.Don't be stupid take my money.report abuseprevious page | next page
