Mauricio,

How are you so certain that most of these kids won't go to college? While I can't see into the future, I'm pretty sure my children will look into furthering their education. My husband and I were excited that our new baby received the $500 from the wonderful, Mr. Alfond. While we have the means to add to an account every month, a $500 head-start sure did help out (especially with all of the bills a new baby adds to the monthly expenses).

I am shocked that anyone could put a negative spin on this.report abuse

Does this also apply to those who cross over to Maine just to have their baby?If so, I can see the "anchor babies"that are some what akin to the illegals who have babies here and become immediately eligible for benefits.report abuse

The negativity in some of these posts is unbelievable! Hundreds of Maine students receive college scholarships every year. The $500 from the Alfond Scholarship Foundation is just that - it's a scholarship. Hooray for higher education! Hooray for a more educated workforce in our state. Newsflash - a scholarship isn't welfare. Thanks to the vision of the late Harold Alfond, more young Maine parents will be encouraged through this program to save for their child's college education - and I certainly hope more Maine youth will attend and graduate from college. These future graduates are the hope and the future of our great state. Any funds that aren't used won't be wasted - the Alfond Scholarship Fund officials will see to that. The Alfond Foundation has funded hundreds of deserving programs and new facilities all over the state over the years - and I for one am personally grateful for Mr. Alfond's generosity and I hope this funding NEVER goes away.report abuse
