Teachers/educational support staff do not get a "free" day off whenever there's a snow day. These days are added to the end of the instructional year. Last year, many school districts were faced with making up between 8 and 10 snow days at the end of the year. It's not free time off - it HAS to be made up, children need to be in school for a certain number of days. I would also like to add that I have a neighbor who is a special education teacher, and her work requires her to attend on snow days (for in-service/planning/meetings). It's not all rainbows and butterflies, and safety MUST come first, no matter what!report abuse

Just once I would like someone who writes here to recognize that many state employees do the work no one else wants to or could do.report abuse

When the State Police and Highway Department think it is unsafe to drive the state government needs to heed their warnings. What sense would it make to have them issue warnings if the state government ignored them?

Mirkwood. I am sure the Union would frown on getting the teachers to school on a snow day. Haven't you seen the WLBZ commericial that features the teach in bed and getting a snow day call? Snore!!!report abuse---
