Didn't the state and federal governments learn anything from D.A.R.E. which was an abyssmal failure? I think the word's pretty much out on the dangers of smoking. All they can do is make sure kids are being carded, and those laws are already in place. The state shouldn't be spending a dime on this, it's just political and there's probably no reliable and tangible way to measure any progress anyway...report abuseseekingtruth

Check the state Office of Fiscal and Policy REview records, EVERY YEAR the $$ for the anti-smoking programs have increased.
The program is carefully monitored by the Maine Center for public health an agency-- that Dora Mills directs as a board member--they get $1 million a year to say that the tobacco money is ending smoking. Oh and 2 other employees of DHHS are on that board and a bunch of people who get money from the tobacco money already, Ed Miller was on that board for years.
Dont' believe there press releases...every single year since 2000 they ahve received an increase in funding...they are no different than the evil . tobacco companies in tricking people to believe that you will "be cool" if you send more money to the bureau of healthreport abuse

Look. for the first time EVAH the smoker rates for kids have shown a lower rate compared tot he US rates. So that means that less money works better. Maine Adult smoking rates are NO differant than the US adult rates.. and never have been different. This story from Ed Miller and the Lung Association is merely propaganda to keep the money flowing. Money does not make a difference, it just keeps more money flowing to nonprofits and friends of Ed Miller and Dr Dora.

If parents would just start punishing their teenage kids who start smoking, then this problem wouldn't be so huge!report abuseYou must be a registered user of MaineToday.com to post a comment. Register or log in.
