The way things are going, we will be so reliant on overseas companies that we will forget how to make things ourselves. We need to start bringing work back into THIS country and providing our own citizens with jobs. Start penalizing these big companies for having their products made overseas. Keep the workers in the United States employed.report abuseSeedy Brown

Once again the overseas' competition is the culprit. The paper business is highly competitive and in a worldwide recession the effects are felt more deeply. When International Paper sold its Androscoggin Mill after being in Maine for over 100 years, the writing was on the wall. The paper industry was dying in the United States and IP had decided which product fitted their customer's need and investor's return. VERSO, the buyer, is speculative, hoping the mill makes money in the form of a quick return, say 10 years. After that, most of the other mills will be shut and VERSO will also pull out. IP, Great Northern, Georgia Pacific, Brown and Oxford...great old companies which helped Maine citizens maintain a great living...BUT THEY "AIN'T" HERE ANYMORE and they will never return. I retired from IP in Jay and am thankful for all the good years and the retiremenet package the company, through the union, provides me. Wish it were so for future generations.report abusereader

Did this Maine paper mill have a company backstab them too? Like what LLbean did to other paper mills in Maine.
